When is Father’s Day 2024?
Father’s Day 2024 will be celebrated on Sunday 16th June.
This is the case in the UK, the United States of America, Canada, and many other countries across Africa, North and South America, Europe, and Asia. In 2023, Father’s Day was on Sunday, June 18th, and in 2025, it will be celebrated on Sunday, June 15th.
The USA founded Father’s Day and so many countries celebrate the event in line with their traditions which state that Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. However, not all countries around the world celebrate Father's Day on the same day. For a full guide on dates for Fathers’ Day 2023, 2024 and 2025 see the table at the bottom of this article.
Is Father’s Day always the third Sunday of June?
In the UK, USA and many other countries Father’s Day is always held on the third Sunday in June. This has been the case since the first official Father’s Day service, held in Spokane, Washington, USA, on Sunday 19th March 1910.
The founder of Father’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd, chose this date to honour her own father, whose birthday was in June. Originally she hoped the service would fall on her father’s actual birthday, June 5th, however the date was pushed back to give church leaders enough time to prepare the service. Since then Father’s Day has stuck to the third Sunday of June in the majority of countries.
Unlike Mother’s Day, which changes date each year in the UK due to being closely related with the dates of Easter celebrations, UK Father’s Day follows a regular pattern each year and always falls on the third Sunday in June. This is a great time of year to hold a celebration in the UK, with the early summertime weather lending itself to lots of outdoor Father’s Day activities such as BBQs, family picnics and day trips dad will enjoy. However, Father’s Day is not a summer event in every country and it is held on different days throughout the year all around the world.
Is Father’s Day always on a Sunday?
So we know that Father’s Day is not always held in June, but is it always on a Sunday? Well, this again depends on the country you are in. Some countries have a set rule to determine the date of Father’s Day, like the UK and USA where Father’s Day is always on the third Sunday of June, or in some Scandinavian countries like Finland and Iceland, where Father’s Day is held on the second Sunday in November. In these examples the actual date will differ each year but Father’s Day will always fall on a Sunday at a similar time in the calendar.
However, some other countries hold Father’s Day on a specific date which could fall on any day of the week, not necessarily a Sunday. For example, in Spain Father’s Day is always held on March 19th. This meant that in 2023 it happened to fall on a Sunday, whereas in 2024 it will be celebrated on a Tuesday.
There are also certain countries where Father’s Day will never fall on a Sunday. In Germany for example, Father’s Day is always celebrated on Ascension Day, the 40th day of Easter, which traditionally falls on a Thursday, usually in mid-May.
